Google Dance means that Google sometimes briefly adjusts the ranks of websites on its search engine rankings pages. This is probably done to update its index or algorithm. This term refers to swings in ranking when Google is playing with or recalibrating its ranking of websites.
Google Dance Context.
- Before 2003, Google announced “Monthly Updates” when it calculated rankings of incoming links. Consequently, websites experienced a huge temporary ranking fluctuation due to the monthly index.
- When Google was indexing, the rankings would “dance” because Google was recalculating where each page should be.
- When Google indexed a new page (or website), it would also cause Google Dance as Google determined where this new page would rank on its search engine results pages (SERPs).
- Nowadays, Google Dance is less common due to constant and more frequent algorithm changes. Update changes are not random. For example, if ranking authority is discounted, sites with formerly high authority will drop.
